It took me almost a quarter century to figure this out but I finally understand now. I know why people drink, smoke, or do drugs. It’s basically an outlet for their anger, frustrations, and anything else that is bothering them. Lately, I have been feeling a lot of resentment towards people I usually wouldn’t even think twice about. Now I have been seriously considering going out for a drink. Tired of being the odd man out, the outcast of sorts. A sinner rather than a saint. You get the picture. I’m not perfect and have never claimed to be.
Although after careful consideration, I believe that my problems wouldn’t go away from drinking or any of that other stuff. It would be gone for a night and that would be it. The next day, I would feel worse and my problems would still be present. I need an intervention and believe that it begins with reading scriptures to keep the mind positive. I’ve been really digging deep into my Prayer Book and my NIV Study Bible. So we’ll see what happens.

Straight edge is a lifestyle that involves many sacrifices and it is not for everyone. I have been a member of this society my entire life and I have to admit that it is my all-time greatest achievement. It was not easy and my social life has suffered because of it. George Washington once said “It is far better to be alone, than to be in bad company.” and it’s definitely true in every sense as it relates to being straight edge. It’s the only drawback that I can come up with. And believe me, I have had a lot of time to think up it’s pros and cons. This lifestyle defines me, it is truly who I am.
I have better things to do with my time than to drink, smoke, or do drugs. Everyone I know, I mean EVERYONE has committed one of these acts once in their life. Some say it’s a mistake, some say it’s normal part of life, I say it’s an excuse. 20,000 people die from alcohol related traffic accidents a year. 50% of all prisoners in the South Dakota State Penitentiary were using drugs at least a month before they committed their crimes. Roughly 5,400,000 die from smoking each year. Those are some wicked statistics.
